Project of EJU Honorary President H.E. Vladimir Putin
After His Excellency President Vladimir Putin accepted to become the European Judo Union’s Honorary President, the Directing Committee proposed a Judo Promotion programme for 2007-2012. Here, the Hon. President would endorse the use of his name to highlight the century old traditions of JUDO, those of Honour and Social Morality.
Through this protocol H.E. President Putin would also endorse that Judo is an international Education system, both physically and morally. It is expected that Judo is promoted to instil within its participants courage, persistence, modesty and respect towards other people. It is also anticipated that Judo teaches to resolve all conflicts with intelligence and without the application of violence.
JUDO is to become the bridge to harmonise relationships between countries with different cultures and different level of economical development.
With these main aims in mind the full Directing Committee of the EJU met President Putin in Sochi, Russia, in the presence of Dr Sandor Csanyi - Hon Vice President EJU; Mr Lassana Palenfo - IOC Member , President of the African Judo Union and President of the African Olympic Committees; Mr Obaid Al Anzi - Vice President of the Asian Judo Union; Mr Liviu Luca - President of the Europe Judo Foundation; and various other personalities from the Business Community who already support the EJU in various projects.
During this Directing Committee Meeting, the President of the EJU, Mr Marius Vizer thanked H.E. President Putin for the wonderful reception of the EJU Delegation and explained that the EJU feels that we should share with the rest of the world the promotional success of Judo in Europe, and he asked the representatives of the two other Judo Unions to explain to the Directing Committee and our Hon. President, the present situation in their respective Unions, and how they feel that this project could contribute to develop further the sport of Judo.
After the two interventions, Mr Sergei Soloveychik gave a detailed explanation of the EJU vision, goals and objectives; the main directions for the popularization of Judo in Europe and the principal goals; a list of EJU events to be organized under the patronage of the Hon. President; the principal means for the implementation of these programmes; and how the recently introduced “Judo for Peace” can be upgraded and given greater importance to be more successful. At the end he also explained how these aims and projects could be put into effect, mainly through the already functioning European Judo Foundation and the constitution of a new International Judo Foundation.
After the proposal of Mr Anissimov to establish ‘International Judo Foundation’ and to entrust the Russian Judo Federation to deal with technical questions on creation and functioning of Foundation, Mr Vizer asked the Directing Committee if they were in favour of these proposals. The approval was unanimous. Mr Arkady Rotenberg was proposed to be the new Chairman of this Foundation and his nomination was also accepted unanimously.
The honoured guests invited to attend this Directing Committee Meeting all pledged their full support and financial assistance.
At the end President Putin invited all Delegates to an informal dinner at his residence to celebrate this historical occasion.

Message from Patrick Hickey to all EJU members:
Dear Judoka,
As you all know I owe my roots in sport to Judo. My introduction to this sport at a very young age influenced my upbringing and taught me one important thing, not to give up under difficult conditions, thus while others surrendered I still kept going. The principles of Politeness, Courage, Sincerity, Self-Control, Honour, Modesty, Friendship and respect although difficult to apply all the time is what makes us different from other sports. Through the application of these principles, I have received support from all of my friends who today voted me for this important and responsible position.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent serving as an officer of the European Judo Union in the position as Treasurer. During this period I gained great experience within the Judo family, and it was also one of the most enjoyable times in my administrative sporting career. I also gained great experience which helped me greatly in my future career in the Olympic World.
I wish the EJU every success and hope it goes from strength to strength.
Patrick Hickey
President
